KAMS Safety Guidelines
You must scroll through the full safety guidelines before you can acknowledge them and submit your application.
1. Key Safety Points
- Flying is not permitted during a Total Fire Ban.
- Engines are NOT to be started and electric-powered models must not be armed in the pits.
- All aircraft must be restrained when starting IC engines or connecting motor batteries on electric models.
- Aircraft are to be started facing away from the pit area and must be shut down before entering the pits.
- Fire extinguishers are located in both pit areas. Turbine pilots MUST have their own fire extinguisher.
- Damaged batteries are to be quenched in water in the metal bins in each pits. Batteries MUST be taken off site by their owner at the end of the flying day and must never be left at the field.
- An airframe pre-flight inspection is required before every flight: check airframe condition, control-surface movement and direction, hinges, range and failsafe.
- Stand to the rear of the aircraft as soon as reasonably practical after starting and when tuning.
- KAMS recommends an engine-kill system for internal-combustion aircraft and a transmitter throttle-lock for electric aircraft.
- The field is remote. Consider the risks of flying alone; stay hydrated, protect against sunburn, and use caution in uneven outfield areas where snakes and other wildlife may be present.
- A First Aid kit and AED are located in the central covered shelter.
- Children must be supervised, remain in the pit area unless directly supervised while learning to fly, and MUST NOT approach pilots flying or the flight line.
- Observe a 20 km/h speed limit on the access road and parking area.
2. Flying Area & No-Fly Zones
- ALL aircraft are to remain within the club property boundaries at ALL times.
- The rear boundary is marked by the property boundary and white boards at the rear of the property.
- No engines running or taxiing behind the red line.
- ALL flying MUST be to the South of the white line.
- Flying over the pit or car park areas is forbidden.
- Flying within 30 metres of the public or pit area is prohibited for ALL aircraft.
- All higher-risk manoeuvres are to be performed in front of the pilot box.
- ALL flying is strictly visual line of sight.
3. Flight Operations
- Pilots MUST have a minimum of Bronze MAAA Wings to fly solo at KAMS. Until assessed, a suitably qualified pilot must supervise.
- Maximum of five models may be flown at any time.
- Pilots MUST be established behind and within the designated pilot area before take-off. For take-off and landing, stand at the front of the box; once established in the circuit, step back to allow others an unrestricted view.
- All flying operations are conducted in front of the designated pilot box.
- Aircraft should be flown in a rectangular circuit determined by wind direction. Communicate clearly with other pilots when undertaking manoeuvres.
- Pilots must loudly call intentions, including take-off, landing direction, dead-stick/glider landing and low pass. Do not take off until ALL pilots acknowledge.
- Dead-stick and glider landings take priority; other pilots should climb higher and give the priority aircraft clear airspace.
- If a full-size aircraft is within KAMS airspace, models are to land or descend to a safe height below 400 ft AGL until it clears.
- ALL model aircraft operations are restricted to below 1000 ft AGL. Operations above 400 ft AGL require a Safety Observer.
4. Special Operations
- A Safety Observer is to assist with operations above 400 ft, including turbine models, giant models (>25 kg) and glider tow-launched models.
- The Safety Observer must be an MAAA member familiar with KAMS operations, over 18, and hold at least Silver Wings certification.
- For complex operations such as glider tow launching, a Safety Observer is to assist.
- Helicopters must be carried to and from the flight line with rotor blades not turning.
- Winch-launched glider pilots must communicate with other pilots before setup and launch; position winch/hi-start about 10 m back from any flight line, keep lines clear of the mown field, blow a whistle before launch, and clearly call landing intentions.
